Shillong, July 8: The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved the establishment of St. Xavier's University in the state, a major step aimed at strengthening higher education and expanding academic opportunities for students across Meghalaya and the Northeast.
Announcing the decision, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the Cabinet has also approved the allotment of 50 acres of land at Mawkhanu to the university at a concessional rate of approximately ₹1 lakh per hectare. The approval follows detailed discussions between the state government and the university authorities regarding the proposed institution.
Sangma described the decision as an investment in the future of Meghalaya's youth, saying the university would provide world-class higher and technical education while opening up new opportunities for students within the state and the wider region.
He noted that St. Xavier's is a premier educational institution with a long-standing reputation for academic excellence. Its establishment in Meghalaya, he said, is expected to significantly enhance the state's higher education ecosystem by offering quality academic programmes, promoting research and innovation, and helping students pursue higher studies closer to home.

According to Sangma, the Cabinet's decision reflects the government's commitment to building a modern, inclusive and future-ready education system capable of meeting the aspirations of young people.
The establishment of St. Xavier's University is part of Meghalaya's broader vision to strengthen educational infrastructure, improve learning opportunities and equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to compete in a rapidly evolving global economy.
