Gangtok, May 16: Vice President of India Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan arrived in Rangpo on Friday on a one-day official visit to Sikkim to participate in the 51st State Day celebrations of the Himalayan state.
The Vice President was accorded a warm reception at the Tourist Facilitation Centre in Rangpo by senior State Government officials. He was received by Additional Secretary Home (Protocol)-cum-State Protocol Officer Ms Mingma Diki Sherpa, District Collector Pakyong Ms Pari Bishnoi, Senior Superintendent of Police Pakyong Ms Paru Ruchal, and SDM Rangpo Ms Sujata Subba.
As part of the traditional welcome ceremony, Shri Radhakrishnan was presented with ceremonial khadas by the officials upon his arrival.
Following the reception at Rangpo, the Vice President and his entourage proceeded to Raj Bhawan in Gangtok, where he is scheduled to stay during the course of the visit.
During his official visit, the Vice President is set to attend the 51st State Day celebrations at Manan Kendra in Gangtok. The event is expected to witness the participation of State Government officials, dignitaries, cultural groups, and members of the public.
Sikkim observes State Day every year to commemorate its historic merger with the Indian Union in 1975, becoming the 22nd state of India. This year’s celebration holds added significance as it follows the culmination of the state’s golden jubilee celebrations marking 50 years of statehood.
The visit of the Vice President is being seen as a significant moment for the state, reflecting the Centre’s continued engagement with and recognition of Sikkim’s progress and contributions in areas such as sustainable development, tourism, organic farming, and environmental conservation.
