In a letter addressed to Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang from The Hague on May 16, Prime Minister Modi described Sikkim’s journey over the past five decades as “remarkable,” praising the state’s steady progress, vibrant cultural spirit, ecological wisdom and social harmony.
The Prime Minister recalled his recent visit to Sikkim during the Statehood celebrations, stating that the warmth and affection shown by the people of the state left a lasting impression on him. He specifically mentioned the grand roadshow in Gangtok and interactions with the youth of Sikkim, whom he described as “confident yet humble, rooted yet forward-looking.”
Highlighting the state’s achievements in sustainability and organic farming, Modi said Sikkim has set an example for the world by balancing development with environmental sensitivity. He also lauded the state’s efforts in promoting organic value chains, farmer producer organisations and agricultural branding infrastructure.
The Prime Minister further noted the impact of several Central Government schemes in Sikkim, including Jal Jeevan Mission, PM Awas Yojana and healthcare initiatives such as Ayush Health and Wellness Centres and Jan Aushadhi Kendras. He stated that more than 1.3 lakh tap water connections have been provided in the state, while nearly 5,000 kilometres of roads have been added, particularly in remote rural areas.
Modi also highlighted tourism as one of Sikkim’s major strengths and reaffirmed the Centre’s commitment to supporting tourism-led growth in the Himalayan state through schemes like Swadesh Darshan and PRASHAD.
Looking ahead, the Prime Minister said Sikkim’s journey towards 75 years of statehood would coincide with India’s centenary of Independence, calling it a historic opportunity to shape the future with clarity and confidence.
He assured continued support and cooperation from the Centre and expressed confidence that “Sikkim’s finest chapters are still ahead.”
