Dimapur Municipal Council to Hold Special Session on No-Confidence Motion on May 22

Dimapur, May 15: The Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) is set to convene a special session on May 22, 2026, to deliberate on a no-confidence motion moved against Council Chairman Hukheto Yepthomi, following support from a majority of the elected members of the civic body.

According to official sources, the motion was formally submitted by two elected members of the council and received by the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, Dimapur, on May 11, 2026. The proposal seeks to remove the chairman from office and has reportedly garnered the backing of 12 elected members, including the deputy chairperson, out of the council’s total strength of 23 elected members.

An official notification issued by Deputy Commissioner Tinojongshi Chang stated that the written notice expressing the intention to move the no-confidence motion was submitted in accordance with the provisions of Section 15 of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2023.

Following the submission, the proposal underwent scrutiny by the competent authority to verify whether it fulfilled the procedural and legal requirements prescribed under the Act. Officials confirmed that the motion was found to be in conformity with the provisions outlined under Chapter II, Section 15 (1) and 15 (2) of the Nagaland Municipal Act, 2023.

The notification further stated that the motion satisfied the statutory requirement regarding the minimum number of elected members required to support such a proposal. After completing the verification process, the Deputy Commissioner expressed satisfaction that the motion was procedurally valid and merited further consideration by the council.

In view of the developments, a special meeting of the elected members of the Dimapur Municipal Council has been convened on May 22 at 11:00 a.m. at the DMC office. During the session, members will discuss and vote on the no-confidence motion.

Authorities clarified that only elected members of the council will be eligible to participate in the proceedings and cast votes. In accordance with the provisions of the Nagaland Municipal Act, ex-officio and nominated members will not be entitled to vote on the motion.

The outcome of the special session is expected to have significant implications for the leadership and functioning of the Dimapur Municipal Council. If the motion secures the required support during the meeting, it could lead to a change in the council’s leadership.
