Two Mizoram men arrested in Assam’s Silchar over alleged unauthorised biometric and facial data collection linked to a fake multinational scheme.

According to police, the accused - identified as Vanlalrinchhana (33) and Raymond Vatha Chozah (34) - had organised biometric registration and facial recognition camps at a marriage hall in Silchar earlier this week. They allegedly collected biometric impressions and facial data from more than 200 youths by offering cash payments of around ₹200 per person.

Cachar Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Pal said the duo failed to provide valid authorisation or clear documentation for the exercise. Police subsequently detained and arrested them after launching an investigation into the operation.

“We detained them and subsequently arrested them as they were collecting biometric data from youths by offering them small amounts of money without proper authorisation or clear documentation,” Pal said.

Several youths who participated in the exercise reportedly told investigators that they were informed the biometric collection was part of a “special scheme” connected to a US-based multinational company and that participants might receive future opportunities in addition to the immediate payment.

Police have registered a case under cheating charges along with relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000. Technical expert teams have also been brought into the investigation to determine the exact purpose behind the biometric data collection exercise and verify the claimed links to the foreign company.

The two accused were produced before a court and remanded to two days of police custody as investigations continue.
