The Chief Minister said the initiative was inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent appeal urging citizens and public representatives to adopt austerity measures, use public resources judiciously, and embrace sustainable practices. By choosing to walk instead of using an official vehicle, Tamang said he hoped to encourage both government officials and the public to adopt simple yet meaningful habits that contribute to environmental conservation and responsible governance.
Sharing the initiative on social media, the Chief Minister noted that the walk symbolised moderation in fuel consumption while reinforcing the values of discipline, sustainability, and public accountability. He said every small action taken by individuals and institutions can collectively make a significant contribution towards protecting the environment and conserving natural resources.
Tamang emphasised that walking is not only an eco-friendly mode of transport but also an effective way to improve physical fitness and mental well-being. He said encouraging such practices would help build a fitter, healthier, and happier Sikkim while reducing unnecessary fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
The Chief Minister further stressed that public leaders have a responsibility to lead by example. He said adopting environmentally conscious practices in daily life reflects a commitment to responsible governance and inspires citizens to participate in sustainable development efforts.
He also encouraged government departments, educational institutions, and public organisations to embrace a culture of austerity by promoting energy conservation, efficient use of public resources, and environmentally friendly practices wherever possible.
The initiative comes at a time when discussions on sustainable living and fuel conservation have gained momentum across the country following Prime Minister Modi's appeal for reduced dependence on fossil fuels and greater adoption of eco-friendly alternatives.
Officials and members of the public welcomed the Chief Minister's gesture, describing it as a practical demonstration of leadership through action and a reminder that meaningful change often begins with simple personal choices. The initiative aligns with Sikkim's long-standing commitment to environmental protection, sustainable development, and responsible public administration.
