Addressing the “Empowerment of Tourism Champions of Meghalaya” programme at Umiam, Sangma cautioned that negative perceptions around tourism projects could harm the state’s image and adversely affect local communities whose livelihoods depend on the sector. He emphasised that while concerns regarding development projects are valid and should be addressed, the broader focus must remain on creating opportunities, generating employment, and ensuring sustainable long-term growth.
The Chief Minister highlighted a series of upcoming tourism initiatives expected to transform Meghalaya’s tourism landscape over the next two to three years. These include the Shillong Ropeway, a skywalk at Mawkdok, a Rain Museum at Mawsynram, and the development of tourism centres in Sohra and Siju. He noted that these projects aim to enhance visitor experience while boosting the local economy.

Sangma also announced progress on infrastructure development, stating that the Shillong airport runway expansion project was awarded on April 1 and is expected to be completed within 15 months. The expansion will enable larger aircraft to operate, significantly improving connectivity to the state.
During the programme, the government distributed sanction letters to beneficiaries under key schemes such as the Chief Minister Meghalaya Homestay Mission, the Community Led Infrastructure Scheme, and the Prime Tourism Vehicle Scheme. Scholarships were also announced for students of the Institute of Hotel Management under the Chief Minister Hospitality Scheme.
Reiterating the government’s vision, Sangma called for collective efforts from all stakeholders to strengthen Meghalaya’s tourism brand and ensure inclusive growth, highlighting tourism as a key driver of employment and economic development in the state.
