Shillong, May 6: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Wednesday underscored the state government’s commitment to strengthening the tourism sector by distributing a range of sanctions and recognitions to beneficiaries at Orchid Lake, Umiam.
The programme, organised by the Department of Tourism Meghalaya, focused on enhancing livelihoods, improving infrastructure, and building skills among tourism stakeholders, referred to as “Tourism Champions.”
During the event, sanction letters were distributed to new beneficiaries under the Chief Minister Meghalaya Homestay Mission, while successful entrepreneurs under the Chief Minister’s Homestay Scheme (PMEGP) were felicitated. Beneficiaries under the Community-led Infrastructure Scheme also received approvals aimed at strengthening grassroots tourism infrastructure.
In a major boost to public amenities, sanctions were handed over for the construction, modification, and upgradation of toilets at 84 tourist sites across the state. The Chief Minister also awarded full-course scholarship certificates to students of the Institute of Hotel Management under the Chief Minister Hospitality Scheme and announced annual stipends for students.

Further, sanction letters were distributed under the Prime Tourism Vehicle Scheme to enhance transport services for tourists.
In recognition of exemplary service, Teiborlang Pakma, a Tourist Buddy, was presented with a bravery award for rescuing a drowning person at Ward’s Lake.
Speaking on the occasion, Sangma said the state is working towards positioning Meghalaya on the global tourism map through a combination of initiatives, including cultural events, hospitality expansion, and infrastructure projects. He emphasised that these efforts are part of a broader vision to generate opportunities, strengthen livelihoods, and establish Meghalaya as a premier tourist destination.
The Chief Minister also called upon all stakeholders to work collectively in building the Meghalaya brand and ensuring sustained opportunities for the youth and people of the state.
