Shillong, May 5, 2026: The Meghalaya Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, has approved a revised estimate for the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme (Phase I), increasing the project cost from ₹553 crore to ₹770 crore.

Officials stated that the revision is mainly due to the relocation of the proposed dam site further upstream. The shift was necessitated by the development of a scientific landfill at Nonghali, requiring adjustments to the original project plan.
The updated estimate also includes provisions for dedicated electrical infrastructure and additional expenses related to land acquisition, aimed at ensuring the project’s long-term sustainability and operational efficiency.

The project is expected to significantly enhance water supply infrastructure for Shillong township, addressing growing urban demand and improving service delivery for residents.
