Guwahati, May 6, 2026: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday submitted his resignation to Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, paving the way for the formation of a new government following the BJP-led NDA’s sweeping victory in the 2026 Assembly elections.
The resignation was submitted at Raj Bhavan as part of the constitutional process after the formal notification of election results. The Governor accepted the resignation and requested Sarma to continue as the caretaker Chief Minister until the new government assumes office.
Speaking to reporters, Sarma said the leader of the new government would be elected during the Bharatiya Janata Party Legislature Party meeting, to be held in the presence of central observers. All newly elected NDA MLAs have been asked to attend the meeting in Guwahati.
The swearing-in ceremony of the new government is likely to take place after May 11, with May 12 being considered as a probable date. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to attend the ceremony, officials said.

The BJP-led NDA alliance secured a decisive mandate in the 126-member Assam Assembly, winning a comfortable majority and setting the stage for a third consecutive term in power. The BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 82 seats, while its allies, Asom Gana Parishad and Bodoland People’s Front, won 10 seats each.
Sarma, who led the BJP campaign in the state, is widely expected to be re-elected as the leader of the legislature party. A special session of the Assembly is expected after the swearing-in, where newly elected MLAs will take oath.
The development marks the beginning of the formal process for the formation of the next government in Assam, with the NDA poised to return to power with a strong mandate.
