Speaker Reviews Progress of Meghalaya Assembly Building, Dismisses Viral Roof Video Concerns

Shillong, May 21, 2026: A high-level review meeting on the construction of the new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang was held on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Thomas A. Sangma.

The internal review meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister in charge of Parliamentary Affairs, Prestone Tynsong, along with consultants, the Project Management Consultant (PMC), and officials from various line departments, including the Public Works Department (PWD), IT Cell, and National Informatics Centre (NIC). The meeting focused on assessing the progress of construction and reviewing various technical and infrastructural aspects related to the project.

Also present during the meeting were Secretary of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Malthus S. Sangma, and Adviser (Legislation), Dr. Andrew Simons.

During the review, officials and consultants presented updates on the ongoing construction works, including structural development, internal infrastructure, technological integration, and coordination among departments involved in the project. The Speaker stated that the progress of work was found to be satisfactory and expressed confidence that the construction of the new Assembly building would be completed within the stipulated timeframe.

The new Meghalaya Legislative Assembly building at Mawdiangdiang is considered one of the state’s most significant infrastructure projects and is expected to serve as a modern legislative complex equipped with improved facilities and digital infrastructure for the functioning of the Assembly.

Responding to a recent viral video circulating on social media regarding the roof structure of the new Assembly building, Thomas A. Sangma said the matter had been blown out of proportion and termed the development unfortunate. He clarified that the issue was being looked into and stressed that misinformation and unverified content could create unnecessary misconceptions among the public.

While appreciating constructive criticism and public concern, the Speaker urged citizens to avoid sharing unverified information that may tarnish the image and dignity of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly institution.
