Sohra MLA Gavin Miguel Mylliem said on Monday that the project, aimed at boosting tourism infrastructure in the state, began last year and is progressing steadily. The skywalk is expected to offer visitors a unique panoramic experience overlooking the dramatic gorge along the Shillong-Sohra highway.

The project will feature a 40-metre-long skywalk, including a seven-metre-wide cantilever section extending outward over the valley. Designed to provide breathtaking views of the lush green landscape and deep V-shaped gorge, the structure is expected to become one of the major tourist attractions in Meghalaya.

Spread across 0.54 acres, the proposed pedestrian deck area will measure around 2,195 square metres. Besides the viewing deck, the project is also expected to include tourism-related amenities such as restaurants, retail spaces and parking facilities to improve the overall visitor experience. Reports indicate that the project has been conceived along the lines of internationally popular skywalks and glass viewing decks.

The Mawkdok Dympep Valley, located around 30 kilometres from Shillong on the route to Sohra, is one of Meghalaya’s most visited viewpoints. Known for its mist-covered hills, dense greenery and stunning gorge, the site is already popular among tourists for activities such as ziplining, photography and sightseeing.

The skywalk project forms part of Meghalaya’s broader effort to strengthen tourism infrastructure and attract more visitors to the state. Officials believe the new attraction will significantly enhance the tourism experience in Sohra and create additional economic opportunities for local communities.
