Commissioner and Secretary of the Transport Department, Sanjay Goyal said despite earlier enforcement drives, some operators were still allegedly continuing their services illegally.

Speaking on the issue, Goyal urged members of the public to report any unauthorised bike taxi activities to the authorities. He stated that District Transport Officers (DTOs) across the state have been given clear instructions to initiate strict legal action against those operating without fulfilling government regulations.

“We have taken enforcement action against them and shut down their place of operation long back. If some of them are still operating illegally, I request the public to come forward and inform us,” he said.

The Transport Department also clarified that the Meghalaya government has already notified rules governing bike aggregator services, which were approved by the state cabinet. Apart from aggregator rules, the government has also introduced separate “Rent a Bike” and “Rent a Taxi” regulations aimed at streamlining self-drive transport services, especially for tourists visiting the state.

According to Goyal, many tourists prefer to ride motorcycles or drive vehicles on their own while travelling in Meghalaya, and the newly introduced rules are intended to facilitate such services through proper licensing and regulation.

He further appealed to entrepreneurs interested in entering the transport business to operate through legal channels by registering with their nearest DTO offices and obtaining the necessary licences instead of running unauthorised services.

“There may be a lack of awareness about the facilities and rules notified by the government. I urge all entrepreneurs who want to get into this business to register, obtain licences and operate legally,” he added.

The department’s renewed warning comes amid continuing concerns over unauthorised bike taxi operations and the need to regulate emerging transport services in the state.
