Shillong, May 25: Conrad K Sangma on Monday held a key meeting with Dharmendra Pradhan to discuss measures aimed at strengthening the education sector in Meghalaya and the wider Northeast region.
The meeting
focused on improving education outcomes, enhancing higher education
infrastructure and addressing several pending issues concerning universities
and schools in the state.
Sharing
details of the discussions, Conrad K Sangma said he apprised the Union Education
Minister about Meghalaya Government’s ongoing efforts to improve the state’s
Performance Grading Index (PGI) score and strengthen the overall quality of
education.
The Chief
Minister highlighted several reforms being implemented by the state government,
including the Structured Pay Framework for Ad Hoc, SSA and Fourth Teachers. He
also discussed school rationalisation initiatives and ongoing infrastructure
upgrades in government schools aimed at improving learning conditions for
students.

Sangma further informed the Union Minister about recent improvements in SSLC
and HSSLC examination results and various support programmes introduced for
school dropouts. He also highlighted the implementation of the Meghalaya
Teacher Eligibility Test (MTET) to strengthen teacher quality and improve
classroom education across the state.
A major
issue raised during the meeting was the urgent appointment of a Vice-Chancellor
for North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), which has remained without a regular
head for an extended period. The Chief Minister also sought expedited
implementation of pending projects under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram
(PMJVK) at the NEHU Tura Campus.
The
Meghalaya Chief Minister further requested support from the Union Government
for the development of Captain Williamson Sangma State University (CWSSU)
through the PM-USHA’s MERU initiative, which aims to strengthen higher
education institutions across the country.

Sangma expressed gratitude to the Union Education Minister for his support and
guidance in strengthening educational institutions and expanding opportunities
for youths in Meghalaya and the Northeast.
The
meeting comes at a significant time as Meghalaya intensifies efforts to reform
its education system following recent concerns over the state’s poor
performance in national education rankings and indicators.
Officials
said the discussions also focused on long-term institutional development,
improving educational access in rural areas and ensuring better quality education
for students across Meghalaya.
