Guwahati, May 25: Assam is set to deploy more than 83,000 enumerators and supervisors for Phase-I operations of Census 2027 as the state government intensifies preparations for India’s first fully digital Census exercise.

The announcement was made during the State-Level Conference of Principal Census Officers (PCOs) on Phase-I of Census 2027 - Houselisting and Housing Census (HLO) - held at the Assam Administrative Staff College in Guwahati.
The conference was attended by Mrityunjay Kumar Narayan, Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India, along with senior officers of the Government of Assam, District Commissioners, Municipal Commissioners and officials of the Directorate of Census Operations, Assam.
Addressing the conference, Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota stated that the next two months would be crucial in laying a strong administrative and operational foundation for Census 2027. He highlighted that the upcoming Census would extensively use mobile applications, online portals and digital monitoring systems, making it India’s first fully digital Census process.
Officials informed the meeting that around 83,535 Enumerators and Supervisors, including reserve personnel, would be deployed during the Phase-I operations across Assam.
According to the schedule announced during the conference, Self-Enumeration for Phase-I in Assam will remain open from August 2 to August 16, 2026. This will be followed by house-to-house Houselisting and Housing Census operations from August 17 to September 15, 2026, to be conducted through trained field personnel using digital devices.

The Chief Secretary stressed the need for timely completion of preparatory measures, including activation of Census Cells, carving of House Listing Blocks (HLBs), appointment and training of field staff, fund disbursement and strengthening of supervision mechanisms.
He also emphasised the importance of accurate data collection, robust digital infrastructure and extensive public awareness campaigns to ensure smooth and transparent Census operations throughout the state.
Reiterating legal safeguards under the Census Act, 1948, Ravi Kota assured that all information collected during the Census would remain strictly confidential.
The Assam Government also reaffirmed its full support for the successful conduct of Census 2027 across the state.
