According to officials, the Ginger USP Project will be implemented through convergence among nearly five departments. Under the project, the main ginger processing centre will be established at Mualkawi in Champhai district.
Additionally, three smaller processing units, referred to as “Spoke Hubs,” will be set up at Tualcheng, Zotlang and Vaphai to facilitate preliminary processing before the produce is transported to the main processing facility.
Officials stated that the spoke hubs will undertake activities such as cleaning, grading, slicing and drying of ginger. Advanced processing activities, including oil extraction, branding and packaging, will be carried out at the main processing centre at Mualkawi.
The government aims to complete installation of machinery for the project within this year. Authorities also clarified that the processing facilities are expected to be operated not directly by the government, but through private investors, entrepreneurs and cooperative societies.
During the meeting, detailed discussions were held regarding timelines, departmental coordination and mechanisms required for smooth implementation of the project.

The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) had earlier identified ginger as Mizoram’s Unique Selling Proposition (USP). Based on this recognition, the “Project Mizoram Ginger Sustainable Cultivation & Value Chain Development” was formulated with an estimated outlay of Rs. 189.78 crore.
Out of the total amount, the North Eastern Council (NEC) has already sanctioned Rs. 30.13 crore for establishing the processing units.
Officials further informed that the sustainable cultivation component of the project will be implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Ministry of Rural Development, Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MoFPI), NABARD, ICAR and IFAD.
The Ginger USP Project marks the first phase of implementation, with the possibility of expanding similar initiatives to other districts of Mizoram in the future.
