Gangtok, May 2, 2026: The fourth council formation and oath-taking ceremony of the newly elected councillors under the Gangtok Municipal Corporation (GMC) was held on Saturday at the GMC Conference Hall in Deorali.
A total of 20 newly elected councillors took oath during the ceremony, which was administered by Municipal Returning Officer for Gangtok District, Tushar G. Nikhare. The event was attended by several dignitaries including Health and Family Welfare, Culture and AYUSH Minister G.T. Dhungel, Urban Development Minister Arun Kumar Upreti, and other senior officials and advisors.
During the council formation, Ward No. 9 councillor Tshering Palden Bhutia of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) was unanimously elected as the Mayor of Gangtok Municipal Corporation after her name was proposed and supported by the councillors.
Similarly, Ward No. 12 (Arithang II) councillor Sara Lama, also representing the SKM party, was unanimously elected as the Deputy Mayor.

Speaking on the occasion, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the Urban Development Department Jitendra Singh Raje congratulated the newly elected councillors on behalf of the Government of Sikkim.
He urged the councillors to carry out their responsibilities with dedication and sincerity while working for the welfare and development of the people of Gangtok.
The ceremony formally marked the constitution of the fourth council of the Gangtok Municipal Corporation, paving the way for the newly elected representatives to begin their tenure in urban governance.
