Nagaland Potato Festival 2026 Highlights Agri-Trade Potential at Jakhama

Jakhama, May 15: The third edition of the Nagaland Potato Festival 2026 was held at Jakhama Village Ground on Friday, bringing together farmers, entrepreneurs, government officials, and agricultural stakeholders to celebrate the importance of potato cultivation and explore its growing potential as a key driver of Nagaland’s agri-trade economy.

The festival was formally inaugurated by Nagaland Minister for Women Resource Development and Horticulture, Salhoutuonuo Kruse, who attended the event as the special guest. The annual festival has emerged as an important platform for promoting agricultural innovation, market linkages, and value-added opportunities in the potato sector.

Addressing the gathering, Kruse said the festival was much more than a celebration of a crop. She described it as a recognition of the hard work and dedication of farmers, the value of agricultural land, and the immense opportunities available within Nagaland’s expanding agri-trade sector. She noted that potato cultivation continues to play a significant role in supporting rural livelihoods and strengthening the state’s agricultural economy.

The minister emphasized the need for continued support to farmers, local entrepreneurs, and line departments working in the agriculture and horticulture sectors. She expressed confidence that greater collaboration among stakeholders would help unlock new market opportunities and contribute to the long-term growth of Nagaland’s agricultural industry.

The programme was hosted by Visakunu Tetso and Vikhehiezo Kulnu, while Rev. Zapovil Sophie, Senior Pastor of Jakhama Baptist Church, offered the invocation. Kehochol Tase, Chairman of the Jakhama Village Council, delivered the welcome address, and Kevipodi Sophie, MLA and Chairman of the District Planning and Development Board (DPDB), Kohima, extended greetings to the participants.

In the keynote address, Dr. Keviu Shüya, Deputy Project Director of the Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA), Kohima, highlighted the economic significance of potato farming and discussed emerging trade and value-chain opportunities associated with the crop. He stressed the importance of adopting modern farming practices, improving productivity, and strengthening market access for farmers.

Short speeches were also delivered by Veyielo Doulo, Director of the Department of Tourism, and the Commanding Officer of the 7th Battalion Madras Regiment, Jakhama Military Station, both of whom highlighted the role of agriculture in promoting local development and rural prosperity.

A major attraction of the festival was the exhibition of stalls showcasing local potato products, agricultural innovations, and value-added food items. Farmers and entrepreneurs had the opportunity to display their produce, exchange ideas, and connect with potential buyers and stakeholders.

The festival concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Avilie Zhotso, Convenor of the Nagaland Potato Festival 2026. Organisers said the event aimed to promote sustainable agriculture, encourage local entrepreneurship, and create greater market opportunities for potato growers across Nagaland, while reinforcing the state's vision of building a stronger and more resilient agricultural economy.
