New Delhi, May 15: Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma on Friday highlighted the growing economic and strategic importance of the Northeast during the curtain raiser programme for the North East Infrastructure Summit & Exhibition (NEIINFRA) 2026 held in New Delhi.
Addressing the event, the Meghalaya Chief Minister described the Northeast as India’s emerging growth engine and emphasised the region’s transformation through major investments in connectivity, logistics, digital infrastructure and regional trade corridors.
Sangma said the Northeast is steadily emerging as India’s strategic gateway to ASEAN and BBIN nations, with Meghalaya playing a key role in the transformation.
He highlighted several ongoing and upcoming infrastructure initiatives in Meghalaya, including new road projects, airport expansion, high-speed corridors and the development of New Shillong City.
The Chief Minister also stressed the state government’s focus on strengthening agri-value chains and promoting GI-tagged products to create a future-ready and aspirational economy.

Referring to Shillong’s growing cultural identity, Sangma said the city is rising as the “Music Capital of India,” while Meghalaya is also preparing to host the 39th National Games in 2027, creating new opportunities for investment, innovation and sustainable development.
He said NEIINFRA 2026 would serve as an important platform to showcase the strengths and potential of the Northeast, facilitate partnerships and shape the next phase of economic growth for the region.
