Mizoram: MISA Criticises New MBSE Result Format, Says It Will Hurt Academic Competition

Aizawl, May 8: The Mizoram Independent School Association (MISA) has criticised the new format adopted by the Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) for publishing HSLC and HSSLC examination results, alleging that the move could negatively affect academic competition and student motivation in Mizoram.

In a statement issued on May 8, MISA expressed dissatisfaction over MBSE’s decision not to publish the merit list, subject toppers, number of letters secured and division-wise details in this year’s HSLC and HSSLC results.

The association stated that the absence of detailed rankings and toppers had disappointed many people in the state and weakened the healthy spirit of competition among students. According to MISA, the excitement and academic atmosphere traditionally associated with the declaration of matriculation results had significantly diminished this year.

MISA argued that the earlier practice of highlighting outstanding individual and school performances encouraged both students and institutions to strive for excellence. It claimed that the new system placed government, deficit and private schools on the same footing regardless of their academic performance and efforts, which it described as a decline in educational standards.

The association further warned that removing academic competition could gradually lower the quality of education in the state.

Criticising the Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) system implemented at lower classes, MISA said the “No Detention Policy” had adversely affected elementary education by reducing students’ seriousness, hard work and motivation from Classes 1 to 8.

MISA also rejected the reasons reportedly cited by MBSE and the concerned government authorities for changing the result publication format, including reducing rote learning, easing examination pressure and aligning with CBSE and ICSE practices.

According to the association, the new format would neither eliminate rote learning nor reduce examination stress. It stated that examination pressure exists at every level of education and cannot be entirely avoided.

The association maintained that MBSE examinations differ significantly from CBSE and ICSE examinations and therefore should not necessarily follow the same result publication practices.

MISA warned that the new result system could encourage complacency among students and discourage academically talented and ambitious learners in the state.
