Kuki CSO Working Committee Rejects ‘Foreign Aggression’ Narrative in Kamjong Violence

Imphal, May 12: The Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, has strongly condemned what it described as “misleading and inflammatory” narratives circulated regarding recent incidents in Manipur’s Kamjong district, accusing certain groups of spreading unverified allegations and communal propaganda.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, the committee criticised claims made by the Meitei Alliance linking the violence to “foreign aggression” and Myanmar-based Kuki militant groups, stating that such assertions lacked credible evidence and risked escalating tensions in the already fragile region.

The committee pointed out that Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, after visiting affected villages, had clarified that the term “foreign aggression” was not mentioned in official reports submitted to the government.

The organisation further stated that allegations regarding cross-border attacks, drone warfare, and large-scale foreign incursions remain contested and have not been independently verified through transparent public investigations.

The Kuki CSO Working Committee also accused NSCN-IM and Eastern Flank sympathisers in Kamjong and Ukhrul districts of allegedly spreading misinformation aimed at misrepresenting attacks on Kuki villages while concealing prevailing ground realities.

According to the statement, the continued silence surrounding the reported burning of Kuki villages, including Lanchah village in Kamjong district, reflected a “selective approach” toward violence affecting Kuki communities.

The committee raised concerns over the activities of armed underground groups operating along the Indo-Myanmar border, including reports of NSCN-linked armed elements in civilian-populated areas, obstruction of lawful security operations, and mobilisation of local support networks.

It also expressed concern over alleged obstruction of security force movement and combing operations by organised groups during attempts to apprehend armed cadres in certain areas, stating that interference in lawful security operations undermines the rule of law and endangers civilian safety.

The statement criticised attempts to collectively portray the Kuki community and Kuki civil society organisations as responsible for transnational militancy, calling such accusations divisive and harmful to peace-building efforts in Manipur.

The committee urged both the Government of India and the state authorities to prevent the spread of misinformation and communal propaganda, conduct impartial investigations into militant activities along the Indo-Myanmar border, investigate obstruction of security operations, and ensure protection of civilians irrespective of ethnicity or religion.

The Kuki CSO Working Committee reiterated its commitment to constitutional values, peaceful coexistence, and the protection of innocent civilians, while urging all communities to reject attempts to exploit tragic incidents for communal polarisation and political agendas.
