International Seminar on Northeast Language, Culture and Literature Begins at Mizoram University

Aizawl, May 20: A three-day international seminar on “Language, Culture and Literature in Northeast India” organised by the Department of Mizo, Mizoram University (MZU), commenced on Wednesday at the Dean Seminar Hall, School of Humanities and Languages, MZU.

The inaugural session was chaired by Dr. Zoramdinthara, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Mizo. Pro Vice Chancellor of Mizoram University Pravakar Rath attended the programme as the chief guest.

The event began with an inaugural song presented by the Department of Mizo. Delivering the keynote address, Prof. Rath highlighted the importance of collaborative academic research in preserving and promoting the rich linguistic, cultural and literary diversity of Northeast India.

He described language as a vital element that connects communities, strengthens identity and preserves cultural heritage. He also stressed the importance of mother tongues and praised the Mizo language for serving as a common medium of communication among people living in Mizoram.

The first academic session was moderated by Prof. K.C. Lalthlamuani from the Department of English and Culture Studies, MZU. Scholars from different institutions presented research papers on various themes related to language, culture and literature in the region.

Among the presenters were Lalrammawia Ngente, Associate Professor from the Department of Mizo at Government Johnson College, Dr. Zothanchhingi Khiangte from Bodoland University, and Dr. Lalthuamliana from Myanmar.

The seminar, which will continue till May 22, has brought together scholars and researchers from India and abroad to exchange ideas and discuss issues concerning indigenous languages, literary traditions and cultural preservation in Northeast India.

University officials said the seminar aims to strengthen academic dialogue and encourage deeper research into the linguistic and cultural heritage of the region.
