In First Official Engagement, Himanta Biswa Sarma Pays Tribute to Gopinath Bordoloi

Guwahati, May 13: In his first official engagement after taking oath for a second term as Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday visited the memorial of Bharat Ratna Gopinath Bordoloi at Silpukhuri in Guwahati.

During the visit, the Chief Minister paid floral tributes to the legendary freedom fighter and lit the ceremonial lamp at the memorial site.

Officials said the visit marked Sarma’s first official programme after being sworn in for a second consecutive term as Chief Minister.

Paying homage to Gopinath Bordoloi, popularly known as “Lokpriya,” Sarma reaffirmed his commitment to the security, development, and progress of Assam.

Invoking the ideals and legacy of Assam’s first Chief Minister, Sarma dedicated the beginning of his new tenure to the vision of building a “New Assam.”

Gopinath Bordoloi, who played a significant role in India’s freedom movement and in safeguarding Assam’s interests during the pre- and post-Independence period, was posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian honour.

The Chief Minister’s visit comes a day after the BJP-led NDA government in Assam officially assumed office for a new term following the swearing-in ceremony attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several senior NDA leaders.
