Silchar, May 6: In a major operation, Cachar Police recovered a hand grenade, an Italian-made 9mm pistol, ammunition and several suspicious documents from a rented house in the Ramnagar area of Silchar, Assam, on Wednesday night.

Two persons, identified as Laishram Teki Meitei and Monalisa Sanj, both reportedly from Churachandpur in Manipur, were detained during the raid conducted at a tenanted house located at FCI Lane in Ramnagar.
According to preliminary information, the duo had been living in the locality as tenants and had introduced themselves as traders.
During the search operation, police seized a hand grenade, an Italian-made 9mm pistol, five rounds of ammunition and multiple identity cards along with other suspicious documents from their possession.
Police sources said the male detainee claimed during questioning that he had been displaced from Churachandpur due to the ongoing ethnic unrest in Manipur and had kept the pistol and grenade for “safety purposes.” He also reportedly admitted that he did not possess any valid license for the firearm.

Following the recovery of the grenade, a bomb disposal squad from the Assam Rifles was called to the scene. The grenade was later secured and is expected to be defused in a controlled environment.
The incident created panic among local residents, with some expressing concern over the presence of arms and explosives in the residential locality. Locals have also raised suspicions about possible links of the detainees to anti-social activities, although police have not officially confirmed any such connection.
Senior police officials have launched an investigation to determine how the weapons reached Silchar, the purpose behind their possession, and whether the case has wider links.
Cachar Police is yet to issue an official statement regarding the recovery and detention. Further investigation is underway.
