Guwahati, May 13: Gaurav Gogoi has strongly condemned the alleged racial abuse and assault of a woman from Assam in Delhi, calling for immediate and exemplary action against those responsible.

In a statement posted on social media, the Congress MP described the incident as “shocking” and said such behaviour must neither be normalised nor allowed to recur.
“The recent racial abuse and assault of a woman from Assam in Delhi is shocking and deserves the strongest condemnation. Immediate and exemplary action must be taken so that such behaviour is neither normalised nor repeated,” Gogoi stated.
He further expressed concern over what he described as a growing pattern of racism, harassment, and violence faced by people from the Northeast in the national capital.
According to Gogoi, incidents of discrimination against citizens from northeastern states reflect a “worrying rise” in racial prejudice and intolerance.
The MP stressed that beyond immediate legal action, there is an urgent need for long-term preventive measures, including stronger legal protections, public awareness campaigns, and educational efforts aimed at challenging stereotypes and prejudice against people from the Northeast.
“Incidents like this reflect a worrying rise in cases of citizens from the North East facing racism, harassment, and violence in the national capital,” he said.
Gogoi also underlined the importance of fostering inclusivity and respect for diversity in Indian society, urging authorities and civil society alike to address discriminatory attitudes and ensure the safety and dignity of all citizens regardless of ethnicity or regional background.
The incident has sparked concern on social media, with several users and organisations demanding strict action against those involved and renewed attention towards issues of racial discrimination faced by northeastern communities in metropolitan cities.
