Aizawl, May 31, 2026: Dr. L.N. Tluanga, a pioneering educationist, mathematician, and one of Mizoram's most respected intellectuals, passed away on Sunday at the age of 93. He breathed his last at Aizawl Hospital & Research Centre at around 3:00 PM after battling age-related health complications.

Dr. Tluanga, a resident of Mission Veng, was the first Mizo person to earn a PhD in Mathematics, achieving the milestone in 1974 under Gauhati University. His contribution to education, science, and public service left a lasting impact on Mizoram and the wider Northeast region.
Born in 1933 in Bukpui village, Dr. Tluanga pursued his early education in Sialsuk and Aizawl before obtaining a BSc in Mathematics with Distinction from Scottish Church College in 1955. After briefly serving as a teacher, he continued his higher studies and eventually became the first Mizo scholar to receive a doctorate in Mathematics.
Dr. Tluanga also made history as the first Director of School Education in Mizoram. Following his tenure, he continued to serve the education sector as a consultant and adviser, playing a key role in shaping educational policies and institutions in the state.
A strong advocate of scientific development, he was among the founding members of the Mizoram Science Society (MSS), established in 1979. In recognition of his immense contribution to science and mathematics, the society conferred upon him the Mizoram Science Award on May 13, 2026, making him the first recipient of the prestigious honour.

Beyond academics, Dr. Tluanga was actively involved in church and community service. He served as a respected elder of Mission Veng Presbyterian Church and contributed significantly to Christian ministry, choir activities, and social initiatives.
Leaders, academics, church members, and citizens across Mizoram have expressed condolences, remembering him as a visionary educator and a pioneer who inspired generations of students.
His funeral service will be held at Mission Veng Church on June 1, 2026.
