Daochier Imchen Sworn In as MLA After BJP By-Election Victory in Nagaland

Kohima, May 7: Newly elected BJP MLA Daochier I. Imchen was sworn in as a member of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly on Thursday at Kohima in the presence of Speaker Sharingain Longkumer, Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton, and several legislators.

Sharing details of the ceremony on social media, Imchen said he took the oath with a “clear commitment to serve our people with integrity, determination, and sincerity.” He stated that leadership means “putting service before self, listening to the voices too often unheard, and working steadily toward progress and unity.”

“You have given me your trust, I accept the responsibility and together we chart the path ahead,” he added.

Among those present during the swearing-in ceremony were legislators K.G. Kenye, Achumbemo Kikon, A. Pangjung Jamir, and Nuklutoshi Longkumer.

Congratulating Imchen, the Nagaland BJP unit said his leadership would bring “strength and greater opportunities” for the state while contributing to the vision of a “Viksit Bharat.”

Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton also extended his best wishes, expressing hope that Imchen’s tenure would bring progress, good governance, and greater opportunities for the people of the constituency.

Daochier I. Imchen recently won the 28 Koridang (ST) Assembly constituency by-election in Mokokchung district on a BJP ticket, securing a decisive victory with 7,317 votes. He defeated independent candidate Toshikaba, who secured 4,194 votes, by a margin of 3,123 votes.

Other candidates in the fray included Imliwapang with 3,633 votes and I. Abenjang with 3,219 votes, while Imchatoba Imchen and T. Chalukumba Ao secured 147 and 144 votes respectively.

The by-election was necessitated following the demise of sitting BJP MLA Imkong L. Imchen in November last year. Polling for the by-election was held peacefully on April 9, 2026, recording a voter turnout of over 82.21 percent.
