Guwahati, May 17: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday conducted a comprehensive review of the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs, directing officials to accelerate key civic infrastructure projects and strengthen public service delivery as part of the government's vision to transform Guwahati into one of India's finest metropolitan cities.
The high-level review meeting focused on evaluating the progress of ongoing urban development projects and charting a roadmap for future initiatives aimed at enhancing the quality of life for residents of the state capital. Senior officials from the Department of Housing and Urban Affairs and associated urban agencies participated in the meeting and presented updates on major infrastructure works and upcoming development plans.
During the review, the Chief Minister assessed the performance of key urban agencies, including the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC), the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), the Guwahati Jal Board, and projects being implemented under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT).
Emphasising a citizen-centric approach to urban development, Sarma instructed all agencies to prioritise the supply of safe and pure drinking water, effective management of flash floods, improved sanitation systems, and the creation of well-maintained open public spaces across Guwahati. He noted that these areas remain among the most pressing concerns for residents and require coordinated action from all departments.
The Chief Minister directed officials to fast-track the execution of ongoing civic infrastructure projects while ensuring timely completion and quality implementation. He also stressed the need to strengthen service delivery mechanisms, reduce delays in public works, and adopt efficient systems to address long-standing urban challenges affecting the rapidly expanding city.
Highlighting the government's broader vision for Guwahati, Sarma reiterated that the state aims to develop the city into a modern, sustainable, and well-planned metropolis through improved drainage infrastructure, upgraded sanitation facilities, reliable water supply networks, enhanced public amenities, and environmentally responsible urban planning.
