Aizawl, April 23: The Department of Library and Information Science, Mizoram University, organised a workshop on “Use of AI in Research: Tools and Techniques” at the Dean’s SEMIS Hall on Wednesday, bringing together around 80 participants from various academic and research institutions to explore the growing role of artificial intelligence in scholarly work.

The workshop aimed to familiarise researchers, faculty members, students, and information professionals with emerging AI technologies and their applications in academic research. Participants engaged in discussions on how artificial intelligence is transforming the way research is conducted, while also examining the ethical responsibilities associated with its use.
The programme featured renowned experts in the field of Library and Information Science, including Prof. Manoj Kumar Sinha, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science at Assam University, Silchar, and Prof. Rupak Chakraborty, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science at Panjab University, Chandigarh. Both resource persons shared insights into the latest AI-enabled tools and techniques that can support researchers in various stages of academic work.
The workshop commenced with a welcome address by Prof. Manoj Kumar Verma, Head of the Department of Library and Information Science and Workshop Director. In his remarks, he outlined the objectives of the programme and highlighted the increasing significance of artificial intelligence in higher education and research. He noted that AI is rapidly becoming an integral part of the academic ecosystem and stressed the importance of equipping researchers with the knowledge and skills needed to use these technologies effectively.
Vanlalchhawna, Dean of the School of Education and Humanities (SEMIS), also addressed the gathering and spoke about the expanding influence of AI across multiple disciplines. He observed that artificial intelligence is reshaping the way knowledge is created, managed, and disseminated, making it essential for academic institutions to adapt to these technological developments.
The workshop was formally inaugurated by Prof. Dibakar Chandra Deka, Vice-Chancellor of Mizoram University. In his address, he emphasized the need for researchers and educators to embrace technological advancements while maintaining high standards of academic integrity and ethical conduct.
A major focus of the workshop was the responsible use of artificial intelligence in research and academic writing. During his presentation, Prof. Manoj Kumar Sinha discussed the opportunities and challenges associated with AI-assisted research. He explained that while AI tools can significantly improve efficiency in literature review, data analysis, writing support, and information retrieval, researchers must ensure that their use remains transparent, ethical, and aligned with established academic principles.
The speakers stressed that AI should be viewed as a supportive tool rather than a replacement for critical thinking, originality, and scholarly judgment. Participants were encouraged to understand both the capabilities and limitations of AI technologies and to use them responsibly in their academic pursuits.
The workshop was structured into two sessions that combined theoretical discussions with practical demonstrations. Participants received hands-on exposure to various AI-powered research tools, enabling them to better understand how these technologies can assist in research workflows and academic productivity.

The event attracted faculty members, research scholars, librarians, and students from different institutions, reflecting growing interest in the application of artificial intelligence in higher education and research. The workshop concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Ruth Lalthlamuanpuii, Assistant Professor and Workshop Convener. She expressed appreciation to the resource persons, participants, and organisers for contributing to the success of the event.
Officials said the workshop reinforced the importance of balancing innovation with ethical responsibility and highlighted the need for continued dialogue on the role of AI in shaping the future of academic research and knowledge creation.
