Gangtok, April 23: The Government of Sikkim has imposed a temporary ban on the operation and flying of drones across Gangtok district from April 26 to April 28, 2026, as part of heightened security measures ahead of the scheduled visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the state.

The restriction was announced through an office order issued by the Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation. According to the notification, the use of all unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), commonly known as drones, will remain prohibited throughout the district during the specified period to ensure the safety and security of the Prime Minister and the public.
Officials said the decision forms part of a comprehensive security plan prepared for the Prime Minister’s visit, during which he is expected to participate in a series of official programmes in Sikkim. Security agencies have intensified surveillance and coordination across the state to facilitate the smooth conduct of the visit.
The government has directed all individuals, commercial operators, organisations, photographers, videographers, and drone enthusiasts to strictly adhere to the ban. Authorities have warned that any unauthorised operation of drones during the restricted period will be treated as a violation of the order and will attract legal action.

According to the notification, violators will face proceedings under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), along with applicable provisions and regulations of the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), which govern the operation of drones in India.
Officials urged the public to cooperate with the temporary restrictions in the interest of national security and public safety. They also appealed to residents and visitors to comply with all advisories issued by the administration during the Prime Minister's visit.
The temporary drone ban is among several precautionary measures being implemented by the state government to ensure that all events associated with the Prime Minister's visit are conducted safely, securely, and without disruption.
