Agartala, April 17: The Tipra Motha Party (TMP) appeared poised for a commanding victory in the 2026 elections to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC), with early counting trends indicating a significant surge in support for the regional party across the tribal belt of the state.

As counting progressed across the 28-member autonomous council, the party led by Pradyot Kishore Debbarma emerged as the dominant political force, securing leads in a majority of constituencies. According to early trends, TMP was ahead in 22 of the 28 seats, including 12 seats where it had already established winning margins, placing it firmly on course to retain and strengthen its position in the influential tribal council.
The TTAADC, which governs nearly two-thirds of Tripura’s geographical area and is home to a large section of the state’s indigenous population, is considered one of the most significant political institutions in the state. The outcome of the council elections is closely watched as an indicator of political sentiment among tribal communities.
In contrast, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which had campaigned aggressively and was regarded as a major contender in the tribal areas, registered a relatively modest performance in the initial rounds of counting. The party had won one seat and was leading in four others at the time of reporting.
Interestingly, despite being partners in the BJP-led coalition government in Tripura, the BJP and Tipra Motha contested the TTAADC elections separately. Political observers viewed the contest as an important test of each party’s independent strength among tribal voters.
According to Bipul Barman, Officer on Special Duty in the State Election Commission, the counting process commenced peacefully at 8 a.m. across 17 counting centres under extensive security arrangements. Election officials reported smooth proceedings with no major incidents, ensuring transparency and orderly conduct throughout the counting exercise.
If the trends are confirmed in the final results, the election would represent a significant improvement for Tipra Motha compared to its performance in the 2021 TTAADC elections. In the previous council polls, the party secured 18 seats, while the BJP won nine. The current performance suggests a substantial expansion of TMP’s influence and electoral reach within the autonomous district council areas.
Political analysts attribute the party’s strong showing to its continued focus on issues concerning indigenous identity, tribal rights, development and self-governance. Over the years, Tipra Motha has established itself as a major political force among tribal communities and has successfully consolidated support across several regions under the TTAADC.
The election outcome is also expected to have broader political implications for Tripura. A stronger mandate for Tipra Motha could enhance the party’s influence in state politics and strengthen its bargaining position on issues concerning tribal welfare, constitutional safeguards and development priorities.
Supporters of the party celebrated the early leads in several constituencies, expressing confidence that the final results would further consolidate Tipra Motha’s position as the leading political voice in the tribal areas of the state.
While election officials continued counting votes late into the day, political observers noted that the emerging trends reflect the evolving dynamics of Tripura’s tribal politics. If the final results mirror the early leads, the 2026 TTAADC elections will mark another significant milestone in the rise of Tipra Motha as a dominant force in the state's indigenous political landscape.
The final outcome is expected to shape the future direction of governance within the TTAADC and influence the broader political discourse in Tripura in the years ahead.
