Tangkhul Naga Group Claims Naga Village Guard Killed in Ambush, Says Deceased Kukis Not Civilians

Ukhrul, April 27, 2026: The Central Working Committee (CWC) of the Tangkhul Naga Foothills’ Organisation (TNFO) has strongly rebutted a recent statement issued by the Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul, on April 25, calling it a “distortion of facts.”

TNFO Rebuts Kuki CSO Statement, Rejects Claims of ‘Unarmed Civilians’
Two deceased individuals wearing camouflage and tactical gear reportedly linked to the recent ambush incident in the Ukhrul region of Manipur.

In a statement issued by its Media, Information and Publicity wing, the TNFO alleged that a Naga Village Volunteers Guard was killed in a deliberate ambush while on patrol, describing the incident as a targeted act of violence carried out by what it termed “Kuki refugee militants.”

The organisation rejected claims that the deceased individuals from the Kuki side were innocent civilians, arguing that people found wearing combat-style clothing and equipped with tactical gear could not be described as unarmed civilians.

TNFO stated that the presence of such gear in a conflict situation raises serious questions about the nature of the individuals involved. The group said the narrative portraying them as civilians does not withstand scrutiny and termed it an attempt to misrepresent the incident.

The organisation further called for accountability based on facts, stating that initiating an ambush and later portraying the situation as victimhood violates both traditional Naga customary law and the law of the land.

Responding to criticism over the airlifting of injured individuals Ramshang Kamodang and Shonshok Mahung, TNFO said the evacuation was a humanitarian measure intended to provide urgent medical assistance. It added that using state resources to save lives should not be misinterpreted as bias.

The statement also asserted that Ukhrul, Saikul and Kamjong districts are ancestral lands of the Naga community and urged all communities residing in the area to respect local laws and authorities.

The development comes amid ongoing tensions in parts of Manipur, with both sides continuing to exchange statements over recent incidents in the region.
