Gangtok, April 15: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) attended the Golden Jubilee celebration of Sikkim Express at Manan Kendra in Gangtok on Tuesday, commemorating the newspaper's remarkable 50-year journey in journalism and its enduring contribution to the democratic and social development of the state.

Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister described the occasion as a significant milestone not only for the publication but also for the media fraternity and the people of Sikkim. He said that the Golden Jubilee reflects five decades of dedicated journalism, professionalism, and public service, during which the newspaper has chronicled the state's transformation while upholding the values of responsible reporting.
Recalling the newspaper's legacy, Tamang noted that Sikkim Express was founded in 1976 by the late Ram Patro, whose vision and commitment laid the foundation for one of the state's most respected English-language newspapers. He acknowledged that the publication continues to uphold its founding principles under the leadership of Amit Patro, carrying forward a tradition of credible and balanced journalism.
The Chief Minister said the newspaper has played a vital role in documenting Sikkim's political, social, economic, and cultural journey over the past five decades. He observed that through objective reporting and responsible journalism, Sikkim Express has earned the trust of readers while contributing significantly to the strengthening of democratic values and public discourse in the state.
Highlighting the importance of a free and independent media, Tamang said that a responsible press is one of the cornerstones of a vibrant democracy. He stated that journalists play an indispensable role in informing citizens, promoting transparency, questioning authority, and inspiring positive social change. He noted that a strong media helps build an informed society and supports accountable governance.
Reaffirming the state government's commitment to the welfare of journalists, the Chief Minister said the government will continue to introduce initiatives aimed at strengthening media institutions and improving the welfare of media professionals. He added that efforts would continue to empower the evolving media landscape in Sikkim by creating a supportive environment for ethical journalism and professional growth.
