In a press statement, the NWU expressed serious concern over reports of intimidation, physical manhandling, and the use of excessive force against women who were stationed at village gates to safeguard their communities amid ongoing tensions.

According to the Union, the presence of women at village entry points is a traditional practice aimed at protecting their land and villages. The organisation stressed that these women are peacefully performing their customary responsibilities and should not be treated as adversaries.

The NWU alleged that personnel from the Assam Rifles deployed in Naga hill areas have engaged in acts such as pushing, verbal intimidation, and forceful dispersal of unarmed women. It stated that such actions violate basic human dignity and contradict legal protections guaranteed to citizens.

The Union also highlighted a recent incident at Talui village on April 25, 2026, where an Assam Rifles convoy reportedly forced its way through bamboo barricades set up by villagers. The convoy allegedly rammed through the village gate while women were guarding the area, resulting in serious injuries to two civilians.

Condemning the incident, the NWU said the actions of the security personnel were insensitive and dangerous, particularly in an already tense environment.

The organisation urged both the state and central governments to immediately halt the alleged excessive use of force against Naga women and villagers, respect the customary role of women as defenders of their land, and ensure impartiality in dealing with different communities.

It further demanded legal action against those responsible for the Talui village incident and called for the withdrawal of Assam Rifles from Naga territories, alleging bias in the discharge of their duties.

Emphasizing the need for respect and equality, the NWU stated that indigenous Naga women must be allowed to protect their land and people without fear, intimidation, or coercion.
