According to an order issued by the Home Department, internet services including mobile data, broadband, VSATs, and VPN services have been suspended in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Kakching, and Bishnupur districts.

The order, issued under Rule 3 of the Temporary Suspension of Telecommunication Services Rules, 2024, came into effect from 2:00 PM on April 7, 2026, and will remain in force for three days, unless exemptions are granted by the state government.

Authorities said the decision was taken as a preventive measure to curb the spread of rumours, hate speech, and inflammatory content on social media platforms such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and X (Twitter), which could potentially escalate tensions and disrupt law and order.

The government expressed concern that anti-social elements might use social media to mobilise mobs, spread misinformation, and incite violence, which could lead to damage to public and private property and pose risks to human life.

The order was issued by N. Ashok Kumar, Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home), in the name of the Governor of Manipur. It stated that any violation of the order would invite legal action.

The directive comes amid heightened tensions in parts of Manipur following recent violent incidents in Bishnupur district.
