The Governor’s participation in the self-enumeration process is being viewed as a significant step in promoting public awareness and encouraging citizens to actively engage with the nationwide census programme. The Census of India 2027 is set to be a landmark initiative, leveraging digital technology to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and transparency of data collection across the country.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Singh described the digital census as a major milestone in India’s administrative and statistical history. He called upon census officials in Mizoram to ensure that the exercise is conducted smoothly and effectively throughout the state. Stressing the importance of accurate data collection, he said reliable census information is essential for planning development programmes, allocating resources, and formulating policies that address the needs of the population.

The Governor also appealed to the people of Mizoram to take the census seriously by registering themselves and providing accurate information. He urged citizens to extend full cooperation to census officials and enumerators so that the exercise can be completed successfully within the scheduled timeframe.

Highlighting the geographical challenges of the state, Governor Singh emphasized that census officials must make every effort to reach even the most remote and inaccessible areas of Mizoram. He stated that no household should be left out of the enumeration process and that the exercise should remain simple, transparent, and hassle-free for the public.

Referring to Mizoram’s strong tradition of community participation and cooperation, the Governor stressed the importance of collaboration between census officials, Village Councils, and Local Councils. Such cooperation, he noted, would play a crucial role in facilitating smooth field operations and ensuring comprehensive coverage throughout the state.

During the programme, officials from the Directorate of Census Operations briefed the Governor on the preparations, logistical arrangements, and implementation strategies being adopted for the census in Mizoram. They outlined measures being taken to ensure effective digital data collection and to train personnel involved in the exercise.

Officials informed that the Census of India 2027 will be conducted in two phases. The first phase, known as the Houselisting and Housing Census, commenced on April 1, 2026, while the Population Enumeration phase is scheduled to begin in February 2027.

The self-enumeration facility, which allows citizens to register their details online, will remain available from April 1 to April 15, 2026. This will be followed by the House Listing and Housing Census across Mizoram from April 16 to May 15, 2026, during which enumerators will visit households to collect information.

Officials expressed confidence that the adoption of digital technology will streamline the census process, reduce errors, and enable faster processing of data. The Census 2027 exercise is expected to provide critical demographic and socio-economic information that will guide future development planning and governance across the country.
