Ulaanbaatar, April 11: Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain of Assam added another international medal to her illustrious career by securing a bronze medal in the women's 75kg category at the Asian Boxing Championships 2026 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The medal came after the Indian boxer advanced to the semifinals, reaffirming her status as one of the country's leading women pugilists.
Lovlina's impressive campaign concluded in the semifinal after she suffered a 0-5 defeat to Uzbekistan's Aziza Zokirova. Although she narrowly missed out on a place in the final, reaching the last four ensured her a bronze medal, marking a successful return to the podium at a major continental competition.
The achievement holds special significance for the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist, who revealed that she had contemplated quitting boxing just a few months earlier due to mounting pressure and self-doubt. Reflecting on her journey after winning the medal, Lovlina said the bronze "means more than a gold" because of the emotional and mental challenges she had overcome to continue competing at the highest level.
Hailing from Assam, Lovlina first rose to international prominence after winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the women's welterweight category, becoming one of India's most celebrated boxers. In recognition of her achievements, she was conferred the Arjuna Award in 2021.
Her distinguished career also includes a gold medal at the IBA Women's World Boxing Championships 2023, along with bronze medals at the 2018 and 2019 editions of the World Championships. She also represented India in the 75kg category at the Paris 2024 Olympics, maintaining her consistent presence among the world's top boxers.
Lovlina's latest bronze medal at the Asian Boxing Championships further strengthens her impressive international record and serves as a testament to her resilience, determination, and fighting spirit. The achievement has brought pride to Assam and the nation, while inspiring aspiring athletes with her remarkable comeback after overcoming one of the most challenging phases of her sporting career.
