Ulaanbaatar, April 11: Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain from Assam clinched a bronze medal in the women’s 75kg category at the Asian Boxing Championships 2026 in Ulaanbaatar after reaching the semifinals of the tournament.
Borgohain’s campaign ended in the semifinals following a 0–5 defeat to Uzbekistan’s Aziza Zokirova, settling for bronze but marking a significant return to the international podium.
The medal is particularly meaningful for the Olympic medallist, who revealed that she had been close to stepping away from the sport just months earlier due to mounting pressure and self-doubt. Reflecting on the achievement, Borgohain said the bronze “means more than a gold,” considering the challenges she faced in recent months.
The Assam boxer had earlier won a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in the women’s welterweight category and was honoured with the Arjuna Award in 2021. Her career highlights also include a gold medal at the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships 2023 and bronze medals at the 2018 and 2019 editions of the same tournament.
Borgohain also represented India in the 75kg category at the Paris 2024 Olympics, continuing her strong presence at the international level.
Her latest bronze medal adds another milestone to a distinguished career and reaffirms her reputation as one of India’s leading women boxers, bringing pride to Assam and the nation.
