The selection marks a major milestone not only for the institution but also for the advancement of science education and research in Nagaland. College authorities said the recognition places Kohima Science College among a select group of institutions across the country that have demonstrated excellence and potential in science teaching and academic development.

The announcement of the college’s selection was made on April 16, 2026. The institution had submitted its proposal for inclusion under the scheme in March 2025 and subsequently underwent a rigorous evaluation process. Following detailed scrutiny, the college was shortlisted among 34 institutions from across India competing for a place in the programme.

As part of the final stage of assessment, a presentation was made at the DBT headquarters in New Delhi on March 10, 2026. The presentation was delivered by Dr. Vethselo Doulo, Coordinator of the STAR College Scheme at Kohima Science College, along with Along Longchari, a member of the institution’s core committee. Their presentation highlighted the college’s academic strengths, infrastructure, faculty capabilities, and plans for enhancing science education and research.

Officials noted that the STAR College Scheme is highly competitive, with only about 10 to 15 colleges nationwide being selected each year. The inclusion of Kohima Science College in the programme therefore represents a notable accomplishment and recognition of the institution’s commitment to academic excellence.

Under the scheme, eight science departments of the college—Botany, Chemistry, Geography, Geology, Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, and Zoology—will receive financial assistance from the Department of Biotechnology under the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India.

The grants will be utilized to upgrade laboratory infrastructure, procure advanced scientific instruments and equipment, and enhance teaching and learning facilities. The funding will also support capacity-building initiatives, including workshops, seminars, hands-on training programmes, and faculty development activities designed to improve the quality of science education.

According to officials, the scheme will encourage interdisciplinary learning and provide students with greater exposure to practical and research-oriented approaches in science. By strengthening laboratory-based education and promoting innovation, the programme aims to better prepare students for higher studies, research careers, and emerging opportunities in science and technology.

With enhanced resources and opportunities under the STAR College Scheme, Kohima Science College hopes to nurture a new generation of scientists, researchers, and innovators while raising the standards of undergraduate education in the region.
