In a statement issued on Saturday, HNLC general secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw referred to the mock air raid drill conducted in the city, during which residents were asked to switch off electric lights to simulate conditions during a potential enemy air strike.

Nongtraw said that key military establishments, including the headquarters of the Indian Air Force’s Eastern Air Command, Shillong Cantonment, 101 Area, and Umroi Military Station, are located within or near densely populated areas. He argued that such positioning raises serious concerns about civilian safety during any future conflict scenario.

The outfit also warned authorities against allowing the establishment or expansion of army camps, air force stations, or other strategic military bases in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region. According to the group, the increasing presence of military infrastructure could heighten the vulnerability of civilians in the event of armed conflict.
