Floodwaters inundate a major road in Guwahati after heavy rainfall on April 19, causing severe waterlogging, traffic disruption, and prompting authorities to close schools across the city.

Low-lying areas were inundated as rainwater accumulated on roads, causing major traffic disruptions and inconvenience to commuters. Localities such as Hatigaon and Anil Nagar were among the worst affected, with streets submerged and vehicles moving slowly through flooded stretches.

Residents reported difficulties navigating waterlogged roads as several key areas experienced flash floods after the sudden downpour on April 19. The situation worsened in parts of the city where drainage systems struggled to cope with the heavy rainfall.

Tragedy struck in Maligaon, where a woman reportedly died after accidentally falling into a drain during the spell of heavy rain.

In response to the severe flash flood situation, the Kamrup Metropolitan District Administration ordered the closure of all government and private educational institutions on April 20 within the Guwahati Municipal Corporation area.

The directive, issued by the District Commissioner, applies to all schools and colleges to ensure the safety of students and staff amid hazardous road conditions and waterlogged areas.

Authorities said the decision was taken after several parts of the city experienced significant flooding, making transportation and access to campuses increasingly difficult. Officials are yet to release a detailed assessment of the damage or outline measures to address the recurring drainage problems highlighted by the latest rainfall.
