Green Tech Foundation chairman H. Bansiewdor Nonglang is carried by supporters to a vehicle for hospitalisation after his health deteriorated during a nine-day hunger strike in Shillong.

Nonglang had been on an indefinite hunger strike at Malki to demand that the government scrap the proposed project, which includes development at Lumpongdeng Island. His physical condition reportedly worsened on the ninth day of the protest, prompting colleagues and supporters to shift him to the hospital for medical attention.

Before being hospitalised, Nonglang said the protest was aimed at protecting the ecological and cultural significance of Umiam and Lumpongdeng. He urged supporters to remain committed to the cause and continue advocating for the protection of the area.

“Do not worry about me; worry about Umiam and Lumpongdeng. If we fail to reclaim Lumpongdeng, the indigenous community loses. If we succeed, we will regain ownership of Umiam and Lumpongdeng,” he said.

He added that he had agreed to be admitted to hospital following repeated requests from fellow members of the Green Tech Foundation.

“I have fasted for nine days and done all I can as a leader. But I must consider my people and colleagues who are urging me to end the hunger strike,” he said.

Despite his hospitalisation, Nonglang reiterated his demand that the proposed resort project be scrapped and called on supporters to remain united in the movement.
