Police said the accused, identified as Md. Sabir Ahamed from Kwakta Khuman Thongkhong under Moirang sub-division in Bishnupur district, was apprehended at around 10:30 am following credible intelligence inputs.

During the search of his checked-in baggage, security personnel recovered approximately 6.74 kg of suspected brown sugar concealed inside six containers. The seized contraband and the accused were handed over to Singjamei Police Station, where a case has been registered for further investigation.

During preliminary interrogation, the accused reportedly revealed information about a hidden cache of arms and ammunition in the Kwakta area of Bishnupur district.

Acting on the information, security forces proceeded towards the location. However, at around 1:30 pm, while travelling near Thinungei in Bishnupur district, their movement was obstructed by a crowd after rumours spread regarding the identity and purpose of the security personnel.

Police said the situation escalated as some members of the crowd turned violent, damaging and setting fire to two vehicles associated with the security team. Attempts were also reportedly made to detain the personnel.

Additional forces were rushed to the area, and the crowd was dispersed using minimum necessary force, including tear smoke shells, to restore law and order. Some civilians sustained injuries during the incident and were provided medical assistance.

Authorities confirmed that four persons have been arrested in connection with the mob violence, while efforts are ongoing to identify others involved in arson, unlawful assembly and obstruction of security forces.

A flag march was later conducted in the area to maintain order. Police also urged the public not to spread rumours or misinformation and warned that strict action would be taken against those involved in violence or the spread of false information.
