Itanagar, April 29, 2026: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has hailed the successful inauguration of the divergence tunnels at the Dibang Multipurpose Project as a major milestone in one of India’s largest hydropower initiatives, stating that the achievement will significantly accelerate dam construction and the overall execution of the project.

Congratulating all stakeholders involved, Khandu praised the outstanding coordination between NHPC Limited and Larsen & Toubro (L&T), which played a crucial role in completing the critical infrastructure despite the challenging terrain and difficult working conditions of the remote Dibang Valley region.
According to the Chief Minister, the successful completion and commissioning of the divergence tunnels marks an important phase in the development of the ambitious project. The tunnels will facilitate the diversion of river flow, allowing major dam construction activities to proceed at a faster pace.
Khandu noted that the achievement reflects the dedication, professionalism, and technical expertise of the engineers, workers, and project teams who worked tirelessly to overcome geographical and logistical challenges. He described the accomplishment as a testament to the collective efforts of everyone involved in the project.
“The inauguration of the divergence tunnels is a significant milestone that will accelerate the pace of construction and bring the Dibang Multipurpose Project closer to completion,” the Chief Minister said.
The Dibang Multipurpose Project, being developed in Arunachal Pradesh’s Dibang Valley, is expected to become one of the largest hydroelectric projects in the country. Apart from generating substantial clean energy, the project is also designed to provide flood moderation benefits and contribute to improved water resource management in the region.
Khandu emphasized that the project will play a transformative role in Arunachal Pradesh's development by strengthening energy infrastructure, creating employment opportunities, improving connectivity, and boosting economic growth. He said the project has the potential to bring long-term benefits not only to the state but also to the country by contributing significantly to India's renewable energy capacity.
