Court Convicts 20 in 2018 Abhi-Neel Lynching Case; Sentencing on April 24

Nagaon, April 20: A district court in Assam has convicted 20 individuals in connection with the 2018 mob lynching of two young men in Karbi Anglong, a case that had sparked widespread outrage across the state and the country.

The Nagaon District and Sessions Court delivered the verdict in the case related to the brutal killing of Neelotpal Das and Abhijeet Nath, who were attacked by a mob at Dokmoka on June 8, 2018.

The court found 20 accused guilty in the lynching incident that occurred at Panjuri village under Dokmoka police jurisdiction. The convicted individuals include Bishwaram Swargiary, Panteng Basumatary, Alafajkloz Timung, Innocent Ingti, Raikong Timung, Ratneswar Terang, Phukan Lekti, Ench Timung, Presh Timung, Rupsing Kro, Dhanu Mech, Babusingh Kro, Bikram Hanse, Chikari Rongpi, Babu Rongpi, Vidya Singh Rongpi, Mensing Kro, Deepjyoti Basumatary, Rarish Rongpi, and Onda Mech.

However, the court acquitted 25 other accused persons in the case.

Reacting to the verdict, the father of Neelotpal Das said the family was not fully satisfied with the judgment. Speaking to the media, he noted that there were 45 accused in the case and more than half had been acquitted. He added that the family is considering further legal action.

The court is scheduled to announce the quantum of punishment on April 24 for the convicted individuals.

The lynching of the two youths had triggered massive protests and debates over mob violence and misinformation after the victims were mistaken for child abductors by a mob in Karbi Anglong.
