Imphal, April 29: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand on Wednesday chaired a review meeting at the Manipur Secretariat to assess the progress of property tax collection by the Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) and discuss measures to strengthen revenue generation for improved urban governance and civic infrastructure.

The meeting was attended by senior government officials and representatives of the Imphal Municipal Corporation, who reviewed the current status of property tax collection across the state capital. The discussions focused on identifying challenges in the existing system and exploring strategies to make tax collection more efficient, transparent, and sustainable.
During the review, the Chief Minister examined the pace of revenue collection and stressed the importance of modernising the property tax administration to improve compliance and ensure a stable source of income for municipal bodies. Officials also deliberated on introducing a phased approach to strengthen the property tax system, enabling the civic body to gradually expand its revenue base while ensuring smooth implementation.
Khemchand emphasised that a robust revenue mechanism is essential for the effective functioning of urban local bodies. He noted that increased municipal revenue would enable the government to invest more in essential public services such as road maintenance, drainage systems, waste management, sanitation, street lighting, water supply, and other urban infrastructure projects.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed the state government's commitment to strengthening urban governance through better financial management and improved administrative efficiency. He said sustainable revenue generation is a key component of long-term urban development and will help create cleaner, safer, and more liveable cities for residents.

Officials pointed out that improving property tax collection would significantly enhance the financial capacity of the Imphal Municipal Corporation, reducing dependence on external funding while enabling the civic body to undertake development projects more effectively. They also highlighted the need for greater public awareness regarding the importance of property tax in supporting municipal services.
The meeting concluded with a consensus on adopting practical reforms to improve the efficiency of the tax collection system and ensure greater accountability in revenue administration. The government expressed confidence that strengthening property tax collection would contribute to better civic services, sustainable urban growth, and overall development in Imphal and other urban areas of Manipur.
