Out of the total allocation, the Ministry of Home Affairs has sanctioned ₹424.36 crore to support the operation of relief camps set up by the state government, while an additional ₹523 crore has been earmarked for the rehabilitation of internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The details were disclosed in a response to a Right to Information (RTI) query filed by Congress leader Hareshwar Goshwami.
Data from the state Home Department revealed that 58,881 people were displaced from their homes between May 3, 2023, and March 30, 2026, following the outbreak of ethnic violence in the state.
As of March 10, 2026, a total of 174 relief camps were still operational. Around 3,000 pre-fabricated houses have also been constructed by the Manipur Police Housing Corporation Ltd to provide temporary accommodation for displaced families.
The violence has also resulted in significant loss of life and property. According to official records based on ex gratia payments, 217 deaths have been reported. In addition, 7,894 houses were completely destroyed and 2,646 others partially damaged during the unrest.
The conflict began on May 3, 2023, after a “Tribal Solidarity March” organised in hill districts to oppose the demand for Scheduled Tribe status by the Meitei community.
At the peak of the crisis, more than 300 relief camps were established across the state, sheltering nearly 60,000 displaced persons.
