Sikkim University’s permanent campus at Yangang in South Sikkim, set to be inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 28.

Established in 2007, the central university had been operating from temporary premises for years due to the absence of a dedicated campus. The inauguration of the Yangang campus is expected to mark a major milestone for higher education in the Himalayan state.

The new campus will provide modern infrastructure including classrooms, laboratories, libraries and residential facilities aimed at improving teaching, research and academic collaboration.

The project had experienced delays in earlier years, including during the tenure of former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, drawing criticism over the slow pace of construction and the lack of a permanent campus for the university.

Despite the delays, the university continued to expand its academic programmes and student enrolment, reflecting growing demand for higher education in the region.

Education experts believe that the permanent campus will help strengthen Sikkim’s academic ecosystem by fostering research, innovation and interdisciplinary learning while attracting scholars and collaborations from across the country and abroad.

The development is also expected to boost human resource development in the state by providing better opportunities for students pursuing careers in science, administration, arts and entrepreneurship.

The completion of the Yangang campus has been welcomed by students, faculty and civil society groups who had long advocated for the project. With the inauguration, Sikkim University is expected to focus on expanding academic programmes, improving research output and ensuring inclusive access to quality higher education in the state.
