Gangtok, April 27: Sikkim University is set to achieve a historic milestone as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to virtually inaugurate its long-awaited permanent campus at Yangang in South Sikkim on April 28. The inauguration marks the culmination of nearly two decades of anticipation since the establishment of the Central University in 2007 and is expected to significantly strengthen higher education in the Himalayan state.

Since its inception, Sikkim University has been functioning from temporary premises in Gangtok due to the absence of a dedicated campus. The completion of the permanent campus at Yangang is expected to provide a modern academic environment and create new opportunities for students, researchers, and faculty members.
The newly developed campus is equipped with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including academic blocks, modern classrooms, laboratories, libraries, administrative buildings, hostels, and residential quarters for faculty and staff. The facilities are designed to promote quality teaching, advanced research, innovation, and interdisciplinary learning while enhancing the overall academic experience.
The Yangang campus project had faced several delays over the years, including during the tenure of former Chief Minister Pawan Chamling, drawing criticism from students, educators, and civil society over the prolonged absence of a permanent campus. Despite these setbacks, Sikkim University continued to expand its academic programmes, research activities, and student enrolment, establishing itself as an important centre of higher learning in the Northeast.

Education experts believe the permanent campus will boost Sikkim's academic ecosystem by attracting scholars, researchers, and collaborations from leading institutions across India and abroad. The completion of the Yangang campus has been widely welcomed by students, faculty members, alumni, and civil society organisations who had long advocated for the project. With the inauguration, Sikkim University is expected to embark on a new phase of growth, expanding academic programmes, strengthening research output, and ensuring greater access to quality higher education for future generations.
