Kohima, April 13: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Mahila Morcha Nagaland unit on Sunday highlighted the significance of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, describing it as a landmark legislation aimed at enhancing women’s participation in governance and decision-making processes across the country.
Addressing a press briefing held at the BJYM state office in Kohima, BJP Mahila Morcha leaders emphasized the transformative impact of the Act, which provides 33 percent reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies. The briefing was led by State President T. Rothrong, who termed the legislation a historic milestone in India’s democratic journey and a major step toward achieving gender-inclusive governance.
Speaking to the media, Rothrong said the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam reflects a new vision of development where women are not only beneficiaries of government schemes but also active participants in policymaking and leadership. She noted that the legislation signifies a transition from women-centric development initiatives to a model of women-led governance, ensuring greater representation of women in legislative institutions.
The BJP Mahila Morcha leader credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for championing the legislation and pushing forward reforms aimed at strengthening women's empowerment. According to her, the Act will create more opportunities for women to participate in public life, influence policy decisions, and contribute meaningfully to nation-building.
Rothrong further stated that increasing women's representation in legislative bodies would help bring diverse perspectives into governance and ensure that issues affecting women, children, families, and communities receive greater attention at the policymaking level. She added that empowering women politically is essential for building a more inclusive and equitable society.
As part of a nationwide awareness campaign on the legislation, the BJP Mahila Morcha Nagaland has planned a series of outreach programmes across the state. On April 15, the organization will conduct bike rallies, scooty rallies, and padyatras in various districts to create public awareness about the provisions and significance of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam.
These activities will be followed by Mahila Sammelans on April 16, where women from different backgrounds will be invited to participate in discussions on leadership, governance, and political empowerment. The programmes are expected to serve as platforms for educating women about their rights and encouraging greater involvement in public affairs and democratic processes.

Party leaders present at the briefing said the campaign aims to mobilize women at the grassroots level and generate wider awareness about the benefits of increased political representation. They emphasized that the initiative is not only about reservation but also about creating an environment where women can actively contribute to shaping the future of society.
The BJP Mahila Morcha expressed confidence that the awareness drive would inspire more women in Nagaland to take up leadership roles and participate in governance, thereby strengthening democratic institutions and promoting inclusive development across the state.
