Assam’s Dr Atanu Nath Wins Prestigious Breakthrough Prize

Nalbari, April 23: Tihu College has celebrated a moment of pride after Dr. Atanu Nath, Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics, was honoured with the prestigious Breakthrough Prize, often referred to as the “Oscar of Science.”

Dr. Nath shares the global recognition with 376 scientists worldwide, including around 11 Indians, becoming the first scientist from Northeast India to receive the honour in this category. Notably, he is also the only awardee currently living and working in India among the Indian recipients.

The prize recognises the landmark Muon g−2 experiments conducted at CERN, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Fermilab, which are considered a major breakthrough in modern particle physics.

To mark the achievement, the Tihu College fraternity organised a felicitation ceremony where Principal Dr. Suresh Bharali honoured Dr. Nath with a phulam gamocha on behalf of the institution.

Dr. Nath, who hails from Lalabazar in Hailakandi district of Assam, currently serves as an Assistant Professor at Tihu College in Nalbari. His achievement has been widely celebrated across Assam and the Northeast, bringing pride to the region and the country.
