Guwahati, April 27: A new Assamese feature film, Moromor Deuta, based on a popular literary work by noted writer and filmmaker Bhabendra Nath Saikia, is set for theatrical release on May 15, the makers announced.

The film is adapted from one of Saikia’s well-known stories first published in the children’s magazine Saphura during 1989–90. The story has remained widely read and appreciated for its emotional depth across generations.
Director Himjyoti Talukdar said the project aims to reinterpret the timeless story for contemporary audiences while retaining the essence of the original work. He noted that adapting such a deeply emotional narrative was both a responsibility and an honour.
The film’s trailer, poster and title track were officially unveiled at a programme held on Saturday evening, marking the beginning of its promotional campaign.
Speaking at the event, Preeti Saikia, managing trustee of the Dr. Bhabendra Nath Saikia Children Welfare Trust, described the adaptation as a special moment. She said the story had been meaningful to her late husband and that the film would help carry his literary legacy to a new generation.

Bhabendra Nath Saikia, an eminent academic, writer and filmmaker, received several honours during his career, including seven National Film Awards, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Padma Shri.
The film features a blend of newcomers and established actors from the Assamese film industry, including Bodhisattva Sharma, Mintu Baruah, Aparna Dutta Choudhury, Arun Nath, Gaurav Bora and Kul Kuldeep.
According to the makers, Moromor Deuta promises an emotional and nostalgic cinematic experience, drawing from a story that has long held a cherished place in Assamese literature.
